Jon Whitney targets two signings for Walsall
Walsall boss Jon Whitney is hopeful of making two signings before Walsall return to action against Oxford ¬– with a new midfielder among his targets.
After a hectic festive schedule which saw them play four games in 10 days, the Saddlers now have a break from competitive action with The U’s visiting the Banks’s Stadium on January 13.
Whitney is hoping to use the time to bolster his squad after the loans of Zeli Ismail, Dan Agyei and Shaun Donnellan all expired following the New Year’s Day loss at Plymouth.
And the 47-year-old is eager to land his targets as quickly as possible.
“It’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks and I’m going to try and bring a couple in if I can,” the boss said.
“Myself and my staff have dusted ourselves down following the Plymouth game and we are working hard to bring some players in.
“It’s a case of the sooner the better for us because we can then work with them before the Oxford game.
“I’m hoping we can get something done this week. We need to strengthen in midfield if we can.”
Whitney has already confirmed he wants to keep Ismail at the club until the end of the season – with the winger having put in a string of impressive displays since joining on a temporary basis from League One rivals Bury.
But the manager said he will sit down with Burnley loanee Agyei to discuss his future in the coming days whilst also outlining his reasons for sending Donnellan back to Albion.
“I’m sitting down and having a chat with Dan and Zeli in the coming days,” Whitney added.
“Shaun won’t be coming back. I have let Shaun go back to Albion. I think Shaun wants to play more games which I understand and I can’t guarantee him minutes.
“We have got Kory Roberts who has done really well for us. He is now pushing James Wilson for a place in the team which is fantastic for me.”
