Jon Whitney set to make Walsall changes after fan criticism
Walsall boss Jon Whitney has vowed to make changes this summer after watching his team end the 2016/17 season with a heavy defeat at home to MK Dons.
Goals from Robbie Muirhead, Ben Reeves, Stuart O'Keefe and Harvey Barnes saw Robbie Nielson's side run out 4-1 winners at the Banks's Stadium
Erhun Oztumer netted his 15th goal of the campaign for the Saddlers but it was little consolation for Whitney's men who were second best throughout.
And after hearing some fans call for him to be sacked, Whitney admitted it was a hugely disappointing afternoon.
"No manager wants the fans chanting for him out on the last game of the season when it should be a real positive atmosphere," he said.
"Some of my experienced players could have helped the youngsters out there a lot more. That is the disappointment for me.
"I can handle defeats but there's a bit of an acceptance after the goal because it's the end of the season, it's a dead rubber.
"It's not a dead rubber to me because I am one game away from that type of criticism. The form over the last month hasn't been good enough, we have been too inconsistent.
"I've played some youngsters and I've done it for the right reasons and I knew it would be a risk. But it highlights some of the areas that aren't good enough and I need to make some decisions.
"I understand the fans' criticism and I will take it for my players if they put a shift in. But I won't take it today for some of them – some of them need to hold their hands up and take some criticism themselves.
"I can't keep taking the criticism. Things will change over the summer. I am going to look into people's eyes and they are going to get some truths that they might not like but they are ones that will help me to stay in a job."
