Kory Roberts making the most of his Walsall time gained
He didn't expect to break into Walsall's first team so quickly.
But youngster Kory Roberts is now determined to earn a permanent spot in Jon Whitney's starting XI after a hugely impressive 12 months.
The 19-year-old looks set to earn his fourth start for the Saddlers when they take on MK Dons tomorrow in the final game of the League One season.
And that will cap a remarkable year for the defender who also skippered Walsall's development side to first-place in the Central League North West division.
Roberts though is determined to use this season as a stepping stone for even more success, with the centre-back eager to play more games next year.
"I didn't expect to break into the first team at all," said Roberts, who is in his first year as a professional. "But I have come in and done well.
"Playing for the reserve team, winning the league and being captain has helped.
"And next season I want to make as many appearances as I can for the first team.
"Hopefully I can earn a permanent place. I just have to keep working hard throughout pre-season to try and make that possible."
Roberts made his debut for the Saddlers at Oxford on New Year's Eve and then retained his place for the clash with Rochdale a few days later.
But he had to wait until Tuesday's game against Port Vale for his third first-team appearance.
And Roberts admitted it was great to be back, with the youngster also enjoying playing in a three-man defence.
"Port Vale was a disappointing result but on a personal note I think the game went well," he continued. "It was a great experience to be back with the first team and playing at that high tempo. It felt good and I enjoyed it playing in a three.
"In that formation it's easier to play out from the back and it's easier to get on the ball.
"Even defending, you have more bodies around the middle which helps breaking down play."
Roberts is particularly grateful to reserve-team boss John Ward for the role he has played in his development.
"John has helped me a lot," the teenager continued. "He has told me where I need to improve. He has given me a lot of confidence – especially by giving me the captaincy.
"Having that role on the pitch gives you that extra boost to do what you have to do. I really enjoy it.
"I lead by example. I'm not so much a big talker but that is what I am working on to improve.
"It is great to have John as a coach. With his experience, he's great to work with."
Roberts feels learning to be more vocal is one of the key areas he needs to work on if he is going to become a regular starter.
"When you play for the first team the games are a lot more quicker and more physical," he said. "You always have to be alert because there is always something happening around you.
"Talking is really important. You have to make sure you are always talking because, it doesn't matter how old you are – you're team mates need you."
Roberts also thanked Walsall's fans for their support this season.
"It's a great feeling when you do something right, to hear them cheering behind you," he added.
"I have made mistakes too and sometimes you hear the groans.
"But when I make a good decision or win a first header I have heard the cheers and it just makes you want to do even better and win more challenges."
