Jon Whitney: Walsall players must seize their chance
Walsall boss Jon Whitney has hinted he will ring the changes for the visit of relegation-threatened Port Vale tonight.
The Valiants head to the Banks's Stadium knowing they must win to have a realistic chance of avoiding the drop.
Whitney though is demanding a reaction from his players following a poor display in Saturday's 1-0 loss at Coventry.
And the boss revealed he is considering making changes after the lacklustre outing at the Ricoh.
"I want to look at some players and see if anyone wants to stake a claim, not just for these two games but for next season as well," Whitney said.
"It's an exciting opportunity for me because it gives the chance to reward some effort over the last two weeks.
"There have been a few home truths after Coventry.
"I have spoken to a few players one-on-one and I've told all the players, as well as the youngsters, there will be chances.
"We have to go out and give our fans something to shout about. We can go 12th – into the top half.
"And the kids that play, they are playing to be part of my main squad next year. They've got a chance to stake a claim and keep hold of that shirt."
Port Vale, who lost to Bolton on Saturday, arrive having failed to score in their last five outings.
But with the Valiants fighting for their League One status, Whitney is expecting a tough evening.
"They are in a precarious position and we have to make sure we don't give them a helping hand," the boss continued.
"They have still got a fighting chance and they will come here determined to take it to the last day of the season.
"But we have to give our fans something to shout about. I have got to pick a team that has energy and will enjoy the occasion."
Meanwhile, Walsall fans have reacted with disappointment to the news Scott Laird looks to have played his last game for club.
Whitney has confirmed the Scunthorpe loanee won't feature in the last two games of the season with a permanent move for the defender now unlikely.
But a poll on the Express & Star website showed 91 per cent of fans want to see Laird at the Banks's next season.
