Joe Edwards: Let's finish with a Walsall flourish
Joe Edwards believes it is important Walsall finish with a flourish – so they can carry momentum into next season.
The left wing-back scored the winner as the Saddlers ended a run of six matches without victory by beating Swindon Town at the Banks's Stadium on Easter Monday.
And with a trip to relegated Coventry on Saturday followed by a pair of home games to end the campaign, Edwards is keen to head into the summer on the back of a strong run of form.
"There is a break but if you go into that break having won your last four games of the season, you know in yourself and with the boys you are playing with what you are capable of," he said. "We know there is a lot of ability here. And if we play with confidence now that will help us get off to a flying start next season."
The 13th-placed Saddlers are destined for a mid-table finish whatever the outcome of their final three matches – and Edwards believes the top half is the minimum Walsall should have been expecting.
"That is why we have been disappointed because we should be a top-half team and we should be fighting for the play-offs," he said. "We were at one stage but a few games ago that ended, but we know we can be good.
"It's important for us to keep winning games now because that will give us confidence going into next season.
"If we do finish in the top half that will be a boost and a great place to push on from."
And Edwards knows boss Jon Whitney will be pushing them on through those matches.
"The gaffer is very driven and very eager that we don't let our standards slip and allow the season to just drift," he added. "We want to winning games. We haven't been happy with the last few games. There have been some strong words in the week because we know that we are better than what we had been showing.
"For us there is still plenty to play for. We know we need to improve in areas. And if we can do that work now it will put us in great shape for the start of next season."
