Whitney: Walsall need more points away from home
Walsall have to pick up more points away from home if they are to finish in the League One play-offs, boss Jon Whitney has declared.
The Saddlers travel to take on Charlton tomorrow having won their last six matches at the Banks’s Stadium.
But despite impressive performances at Millwall and Scunthorpe, they haven’t won an away fixture since Boxing Day’s victory at Port Vale.
And Whitney knows that has to change if his team is going to move to the next level.
“We want to build, progress daily and weekly and be more consistent,” the boss said.
“It’s nice going to Charlton on the back of wins against Oldham and Chesterfield. But if we are going to be more consistent we have to get more points away from home..
“We have been really solid. But I think with the belief we have got and the momentum we can now go and see if the home teams can stop us.
“We won’t go to Charlton and be gung-ho. We will respect them. But I believe we can really step up again.
“Instead of just seeing if they can nullify our threat, let’s see if they can cope with our threats.”
Karl Robinson’s side enter the game having secured a first victory in nine outings against Scunthorpe on Tuesday.
But the club is embroiled in off-field turmoil with fans protesting against how owner Roland Duchâtelet is running the club.
And Whitney is expecting a tough game.
“I think there is a bit of unrest at a lot clubs these days,” he said.
“I think at the start of the season Charlton would have expected to be amongst the top teams.
“They have great support but there is a bit of unrest. I know Karl Robinson has gone in there and said a few home truths over the past few weeks.
“But the players stepped forward for him against Scunthorpe. And that is the team I am expecting. Lee Novak up top is a handful Ricky Holmes is one of the best players in this league.
It will be a tough game again but every game is.
“What’s nice is to go into this block of games knowing we are on a really good run of form.”
