Joe Edwards: Walsall haven't given up on play-offs
Joe Edwards says Walsall will not give up hope of a late play-off surge.
The Saddlers entertain Oldham today as they bid to win a fifth straight game at the Banks's Stadium for the first time since 2013.
A 1-0 loss at AFC Wimbledon last weekend saw Jon Whitney's side fall nine-points behind sixth-placed Millwall.
But Edwards believes his team has the potential to make up the ground.
"The play-offs are always at the back of our minds," the 26-year-old said.
"But we just have to take it step by step.
"The games are running out which is the unfortunate thing.
"We know the way we can play and the way we have played this year means there is still a possibility.
"But for now it's all about Oldham and preparing well for that. If we get the three points we will look at the table after that and again after we play Chesterfield on Tuesday.
"But as group we all want to be playing for something at the end of the season. We want to be fighting for promotion.
"There are 12 games which is 36 points. That is more than enough to get in and around there so it's down to us."
Edwards has been Walsall's Mr Versatile throughout the season having played at both right-back and in central midfield.
But he has excelled over the past few months after being deployed as a left wing-back in the Saddlers new 3-5-1-1 formation.
And the former Yeovil man admits he is enjoying the role as well as operating on the opposite flank to Jason McCarthy.
"It's nice to play in one position for a period of time - it helps me progress there," Edwards continued.
"I'm always there for the gaffer if he needs me to change position.
"But the left wing-back role is one I enjoy. You have got to be fit – I wish I was Jason McCarthy fit because it's a lot of running.
"You have got to be able to go forward and defend but you have got to want to do that.
"A lot of players who play there want to do the attacking bit or are more defensive and sit back.
"But I think me and Jason have got a good balance of attacking and defending."
