Walsall boss Jon Whitney sets his sights on top six
Jon Whitney has told his Walsall squad to play without fear for the rest of the season as they bid to make a late surge for the play-offs.
The Saddlers take on Northampton at the Banks's Stadium tomorrow looking to extend their unbeaten run in League One to five matches.
Despite an inconsistent start to the campaign, a win against the struggling Cobblers could see Whitney's men move to within three points of the top six.
And the boss wants his players to enjoy being part of the promotion shake-up.
"We aren't going to look too far ahead but I believe we can be in the top six," the 46-year-old said.
"We spoke about it when there were 20 games left. We said this is now a 20-game season.
"What we had done before wasn't good enough with the points tally. And for me we need to step forward with no fear now.
"We have done that in the past few weeks but I think we can be even more on the front foot and more proactive with our play.
"If we do that teams will struggle against us because we have got energy but we have also got some great, great ability throughout the team."
Northampton had lost five straight games in League One before securing a 3-0 win against rock-bottom Coventry last weekend.
But Whitney, whose side drew 0-0 at Millwall on Wednesday, is expecting a tough game.
"It will be tough - every game in this league is," he said.
"There hasn't been one easy game all year. But we are quite consistent now. It's been all about recovery since Millwall.
"We are looking forward to being back at home after our last two games there. We have got a really fit team and they'll be absolutely fine to go again."
Meanwhile, Whitney revealed the versatility of Will Randall is one of the reasons he signed the youngster on loan from Wolves on deadline day.
"I saw him against us for Swindon as a 17-year-old, he played on the left hand side and tore us up," the boss added.
"He has really good energy and he can also play in a wing-back role which he has done for Swindon in the past.
"He's is one that can create and is very dangerous in one-v-one situations."
