Walsall's Jason McCarthy aims for the top six

Jason McCarthy says Walsall's upturn in form has galvanized the team – with a place in the top six now firmly in their sights.

The Saddlers, who travel to face Millwall tomorrow, secured impressive victories over Sheffield United and Bristol Rovers before then drawing at Bury on Saturday.

That run of form has seen Jon Whitney's side score 10 goals in three outings. And McCarthy believes those results have given the team renewed belief they can push for the play-offs.

"There is more belief, there is more togetherness now," the defender said.

"You can feel it. Everyone is galvanized.

"Training has been more intense. Everyone is pulling in the right direction and there is competition for places all over the pitch.

"You look at the bench; Simeon (Jackson) and Lairdy (Scott Laird) are not starting at the moment and they are two massive players for us.

"There is good competition for places and the intensity from training is being taken into the games.

"Things have changed over the past few weeks.

"But now we need to take that on because there is still a lot of football to be played."

McCarthy scored twice on Saturday as Walsall came from two goals down to lead 3-2 at Gigg Lane.

In the end they had to settle for a point after Tom Soares grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser for the hosts.

But McCarthy feels the team still deserves credit for the way they turned the clash around.

"It's been two crazy games against Bury this season – 3-3 away from home and 3-3 at our place," the Southampton loanee continued.

"It was disappointing afterwards because it felt like a loss in the dressing room. That's obviously a bit strange when you are two-nil down at half-time. But we should have seen it out.

"Now we have to take the positives. To get back into the game the way we did shows real character.

"I think if you had said from Sheffield United, Bristol Rovers and Bury you'd have two wins and a draw – I think you would have taken that.

"And at half-time on Saturday, you would definitely have taken a point. There were positives and negatives."

Despite sitting in the League One relegation zone, only three teams have scored more goals than Bury this season. And McCarthy feels they are better than their position in the table.

"I couldn't believe how good they were going forward," he added.

"They are one of the best in the league going forward. But defensively you can get at them. We showed that second half and I did feel we had it in the bag but we couldn't hold on and we have to look at that because I think we conceded two goals that were quite similar. We will have to learn quick though because it's a quick turnaround now with Millwall."
