January transfer window: Walsall could swoop late for targets

Jon Whitney says he may have to wait until the closing stages of the transfer window before he can add to his Walsall squad.

The Saddlers welcome Bristol Rovers to the Banks's Stadium tomorrow with the boss previously hopeful of making a new signing ahead of the game.

It is understood Whitney is keen to add a winger and striker to his squad.

But while refusing to rule anything out, Whitney said his deals may now get done later in the window.

"I must have charged my phone three times on Wednesday I took so many calls about players," the boss joked.

"That is the way it is now with the loan window.

"Agents have only got one month to get their player a deal.

"I have got a couple of irons in the fire, but I think it is one of them that will go until the end of the month because promises are not always kept in football.

"I just have to make sure I have got a couple of options in case my main targets don't come off. But I'm happy with my group. I will only bring players in if they are the right character and strengthen what we have got."

Whitney revealed dealing with agents can be one of the more tricky sides to football management.

"I do feel a bit sorry for them because they only have one month to get their money in now," he said.

"But they ring you up and say their player can do this for you or that for you.

"But you then ask about the player and they don't even know all the attributes he has got or how many minutes they have played. It's interesting. I have to look at a lot of things to make sure I get the right person in."

While still working on incomings, Walsall yesterday confirmed promising defender Theo Vassell has rejoined Chester on loan.

The 20-year-old, who can play at right-back or in central defence, scored once in 16 appearances for the National League outfit after initially joining on a six-month deal in the summer.
