Walsall boss Jon Whitney has revealed he wants to add more experience to his squad in January.

The Saddlers chief has one of the youngest squads in League One with Jason McCarthy, Matt Preston, Ama Bakayoko and Andreas Makris all aged 21 or younger.

And Whitney feels that needs to be addressed next month, with the boss keen to add more nous to his side.

"I will be looking to strengthen in January if I can," the 45-year-old said.

"The merry go round is starting. It's picking up pace. I think I need a little bit of experience so that's what I'll be looking to add.

"I have got my feelers out there. I've had a few conversations and I've made a few phone calls.

"But we'll see how things progress.

"And we'll see where it takes us over the next few weeks.

"I think it will be a hectic few weeks for a few teams but there won't be that much business done because a lot of my players I need to work on and build on what we have done.

"But I also have to be realistic to know that we may need to strengthen and get some experience into the group.

"That is what I will be looking to do."

Whitney confirmed he is considering both permanent and loan signings in January.

But while he is looking at strengthening all areas of the team, he revealed a defender and wide player are amongst his top targets.

"I brought a lot of younger players in during the last window and they have improved but I need a few more seasoned professionals," the boss continued.

"It could be a loan or it could be a permanent deal. I'll make a decision based on what I feel is best for the football club.

"We need something at the back because we are little bit short on defenders.

"Possibly I will look something in the wide positions.

"We will have a look. The lads have still got a couple of games to show me what they are about and we will see what happens in January."
