Walsall must build on Sheffield United win says Amadou Bakayoko

Goal hero Amadou Bakayoko has called on Walsall to use their shock win over Sheffield United as a springboard for success over the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old striker bagged the only goal as the Saddlers blunted the in-form Blades at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night to end a run of five league games without a win.

Victory moved Jon Whitney's team to within three points of the top six in League One and Bakayoko believes it is now imperative they kick on.

"That is the main thing now," he said. "We have to prepare for the next game and get the results right. Get the three points.

"We knew we needed to get something right. Everyone has stepped up on Tuesday and put a shift in. That is what we need every game now to keep moving forward."

United had not been beaten in the league since August and had won their last seven home games, while the Saddlers surprise win also came just seven days after they had suffered a 4-0 defeat at Rochdale, following which manager Jon Whitney openly questioned the commitment of his players.

Walsall's early FA Cup exit means they do not play again until a trip to Fleetwood on Saturday week and Bakayoko went on: "It has been quite hard for us but we have to keep going.

"The good thing about this game is you get another chance.

"The most important thing is your reaction. I thought we played well on Tuesday and hopefully after the break we can pick up where we left off."

Whitney, meanwhile, believes Bakayoko set his own benchmark with his performance at Bramall Lane. The striker's goal was his seventh of the season and second in League One.

The boss said: "I think now Ama is starting to realise what his games is. It takes time with some of these young players.

"I know when I can put them in and when I can't. The fans need to trust me on that."
