Future is bright for Walsall youngster Dan Vann
Boss Jon Whitney is predicting a bright future for Walsall starlet Dan Vann after the youngster signed his first professional contract.
The highly rated centre-back, who is from Solihull, put pen to paper on a deal this week which keeps him at the Banks's Stadium until the summer of 2018.
At 17-years-old, Vann is the second player in his age group to offered a professional contract this season – with left-back Callum Cockerill-Mollett agreeing similar terms.
And Whitney admits he has been hugely impressed with Vann who he expects to make a big impression on the Saddlers first-team.
"I always think when I sign a young pro can I see them in my first-team in two years time," he said.
"The answer is 'yes' with Dan Vann. He is one of the younger second years. But his attitude and his application is excellent.
"His love of football and most importantly his love of defending is what's stood out whenever I've watched him.
"He's a typical centre-back who loves heading it and loves a tackle. But he is also technically very good which you need to play for a Walsall team.
"He is an honest, hard working individual. I believe he has got a really bright future and hopefully he will be very successful with Walsall Football Club."
Vann admitted he was delighted to sign his first professional.
But he knows the hard work starts now if he is going to fulfil his potential.
"When I was told that the club were offering me a contract I was delighted – I couldn't stop smiling," he said.
"It's a really proud moment. The club is renowned for bringing a lot of kids through so it's really helpful for me to know that there's a clear pathway for me to progress.
"I've seen the lads from last year go into the senior set up and it's really motivated me.
"I've got to now get my head down and make a career in the game.
"I travelled with the team to MK Dons and it was a good experience. I got to see what it's all about so I can get ready for it when my time comes."
