Jason McCarthy keen to break Walsall away duck
Defender Jason McCarthy is targeting all three points when Walsall travel to Swindon tomorrow.
The Saddlers are yet to win on the road in League One this season but travel to the County Ground in good form having lost just once in their last eight outings.
That run has seen Jon Whitney's side secure draws at Bristol Rovers, Peterborough and Gillingham. And McCarthy believes a first away victory in the league is just around the corner.
"Swindon is an opportunity to take all three points," the talented 20-year-old said.
"We have analysed them, we understand where we can get at them but we also understand they are a good footballing side.
"They like to play their stuff but so do we. I imagine it's going to be a very technical game, one for the neutral.
"We will try and keep things very compact when they have got the ball and then we will be very expansive when we have got it.
"We are showing more and more we can do that. We are going there to get all three points."
McCarthy, alongside James O'Connor, Kevin Toner and Scott Laird, is part of a back four that has made huge strides forward in the past few weeks.
And the Southampton loanee thinks having a settled a defence can only be a good thing for the club.
"It's really important to get a settled back four – any manager will tell you that," he continued.
"We are really starting to show our resilience now. It is one loss in eight which is really good.
"We are building relationships on the pitch and we've had a really positive few weeks.
"I thought Jimmy and Kevin were excellent at Gillingham. They won a lot of headers and are starting to build a really good understanding.
"Then me and Lairdy in the full-back roles, we talk all the time and he gives me advice.
"We know their are areas we still need to improve, but I think as a team we are now playing really well."
With the Saddlers having faced a lot of direct teams this season, McCarthy admits he is looking forward to playing a footballing side tomorrow.
"I've been quite surprised just how direct the league has been," added McCarthy.
"Most teams have gone long and looked to upset us that way.
"I'm looking forward to a game where they try to match us and play from the back."
