Jon Whitney: Walsall wary of 'wounded' Shrewsbury
Boss Jon Whitney is wary Walsall will face a 'wounded animal' when they take on West Midlands rivals Shrewsbury tomorrow.
Shrews head to the Banks's Stadium without a permanent manager after Micky Mellon left to take over the reins at Tranmere – they currently sit second bottom in League One and are without a win in their last seven games.
But after signing a host of experienced players in the summer, Whitney feels he has a Saddlers squad that is better than their current position in the table suggests.
"It's a wounded animal in a way – a dangerous one," he said. "Danny Coyne (interim manager) will have them drilled. They have Adam El-Abd who I've looked at in the past, Olly Lancashire, Ryan McGivern, AJ Leitch-Smith, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
"They are all players who have done well in this league. We have to be wary because there will come a time when it starts to click and I'm sure if Micky had stayed he would have got things right.
"That's why it's important we just concentrate on ourselves. We know if we do our jobs right we are a match for anyone.
"We have got a really strong squad to pick from. The bench is going to be strong. There is a lot of competition for places.
"Shrewsbury are in transition and some things haven't worked for them. Now it's up to us to exploit that."
