Walsall's George Dobson has impressed Jon Whitney
Walsall boss Jon Whitney has hailed the resurgence of George Dobson after revealing he held one-on-one talks with the midfielder.
The 18-year-old, who is on loan from West Ham, has impressed for the Saddlers since being restored to the side for the victories over Millwall and Sheffield United.
Prior to that, Dobson had found himself on the fringes of the first-team squad and didn't feature at all throughout September. But following the defeat at Northampton, Whitney revealed Dobson came knocking on his door.
"George came to me after the Northampton game, shut the door behind him and said he wanted to fight for me and this team," he said. "I told him I knew that. But explained I have to decide when it's right to put the younger players in.
"I've been going with experience when possible but George's attitude and performances in training ensured he deserved a place in the side. He is able to dictate play and we needed someone to come in and free Adam Chambers up a little bit because I want Adam to try and win the ball a bit higher. George can link play and in the last two games he's done that really well."
Meanwhile, Joe Edwards admits he is enjoying the chance to showcase what he can do in central midfield.
The 25-year-old began the season at right-back but impressed in midfield as the Saddlers overcame Sheffield United in the Checkatrade Trophy.
And Edwards admits it's a position he enjoys.
"I do enjoy it in there," he said. "I'm comfortable in there. It's where I have played a lot of games, probably the majority of my games – especially when I was Yeovil.
"It is easier to influence the game from there but I'm just happy being on the pitch. I've played right-back, left-back and now midfield this season.
"But I think being versatile has benefited me throughout my career so wherever the gaffer needs me, I will play."
