The Brentford manager, currently fifth in the Championship, grew up a huge Villa fan in Great Barr. The link comes amid suggestions Roberto Di Matteo could get the push should he fail to engineer a win at Preston today.

However, Smith refused to add fuel to the fire. He said: "Aston Villa have got a manager in charge, I have no more to say. I don't really talk about other clubs when there are managers in charge. I was a boyhood Villa fan. Now my job is solely on Brentford."
