Walsall boss Jon Whitney says he has seen a positive response from his players after the defeat to Scunthorpe.

The Saddlers host Millwall at the Banks's Stadium tomorrow as they bid to get their season back on track in the wake of the 4-1 loss to the Iron.

Whitney held a crunch meeting with his squad on Wednesday to discuss the defeat and ensure they bounce back against Neil Harris's side.

And the boss was delighted with how the talks progressed. "The lads were very honest, the staff were too and now everyone is determined to put it right against Millwall," Whitney said.

"It wasn't the hairdryer treatment. It wasn't about criticising individuals.

"Players know when they have made mistakes – they don't need telling.

"What we had to do is look at the mistakes to make sure they don't happen again. The response was excellent. We have worked very hard on the training ground to make sure we put it right against Millwall."

Despite being the bookmakers' favourites for promotion, Millwall enter tomorrow's game on the back of three straight defeats in League One.

Walsall, meanwhile, slipped into the relegation zone after AFC Wimbledon secured a draw against Coventry on Wednesday. And Whitney says his side are determined to get a result that will catapult them up the table.

"If we get a result against Millwall then we have lost one in five and the league is really tight," he continued.

"If we win, it could catapult us up as many as eight places.

"Millwall are a good side but they are coming here off the back off a difficult run as well.

"We have to make sure they don't turn their form round against us.

"It's up to us to set the tempo, start the right way and hopefully get the crowd behind us."

Elsewhere, Walsall's League One clash with Sheffield United, that was due to take place on October 8, has been postponed due to international call-ups.
