Jon Whitney: Walsall deserved a point
Walsall boss Jon Whitney felt a draw was a fair result as his side left Peterborough with a well-earned point.
The Saddlers stretched their unbeaten run in League One to three matches following an entertaining 1-1 draw at London Road.
A first-half Simeon Jackson header put Whitney's side ahead before a spectacular Marcus Maddison strike brought the teams level.
Both sides had their chances to win it, with Scott Laird hitting the post for Saddlers while goalkeeper Neil Etheridge continued his fine form with some impressive saves.
And Whitney felt, overall, a draw was a fair result.
"A draw was fair," the boss said.
"Both teams had good periods in the game. I said before kick-off I thought it would be a good one for the neutral – as its two teams who try and play it the right way.
"The tempo at times was great. It was a good advert for League One and I think we shaded the first-half.
"Second-half, I thought we sat a bit too deep in the opening 20 minutes, the tempo dropped off and we are a team that has to play at a tempo.
"But we stepped it up for the last 15 minutes and if Lairdy's goal had gone in I would have done a David Pleat down the touchline.
"But I think that would have been a bit unfair on them, 1-1 was a fair result because Neil (Etheridge) has made a couple of good saves."
Whitney revealed his players were disappointed in the dressing room that they hadn't won the game, but he believes that shows the team is moving in the right direction.
"The lads had their heads down in the dressing room," he said. "They were disappointed we didn't win the game.
"But that disappointment is a good thing and I've told them we are on the right path. We just need to learn a little bit more. If we can all improve by two per cent we will be really powerful.
"We are creating chances – our front five are doing really well and our back five are defending resolutely when needed. They are the successful ingredients of a good team."
