Jon Whitney promises Walsall fans better performance

Boss Jon Whitney has refused to blame injuries for Walsall's slow start to the season - and has promised supporters an improved performance at Bristol Rovers tonight.

The Saddlers travel to the Memorial Ground without James O'Connor, Isaiah Osbourne and Florent Cuvelier, with the injured trio expected to return for Saturday's clash with Bolton.

All experienced players, their expertise was sorely missed as Walsall fell to defeat at Northampton.

But Whitney is adamant the rest of his squad has what it takes to climb the table, starting with a victory tonight.

"We can't blame injuries," Whitney said. "I have signed players and put a squad together I trust.

"We've paid a heavy price for individual errors recently but they don't make mistakes on purpose and if there was ever an occasion we wanted a Tuesday game, this is it.

"The lads are desperate to get back out there. Bristol is a place we're going to go and enjoy playing our football."

Both Rovers and Saddlers know a win tonight will propel them into mid-table after a difficult opening month.

And Whitney says his players are determined to show supporters what they are really capable of.

"We are going there to show them what we are about," he said.

"I've told the players to go and play their football.

"We are going to be a threat, that's for sure.

"Bristol Rovers have had an indifferent start like we have and that is why it is such an important game.

"For both us, a win can suddenly kick you into mid-table.

"That is what one win does for you.

"And I know that springboard, from one win, will make a huge difference to this bunch of players."

Whitney insists he still has complete confidence in his side.

"We understand where we have fallen short," he added.

"We are in a fight but we are up for the fight and we are in it together.

"Of course things are going to take time with the amount of additions we've had. But we know we are going to get there in the end.

"I have so much belief in this team, I truly believe this team will be okay."
