Jon Whitney: We need time to hit Walsall heights
Boss Jon Whitney has called for supporters to remain patient as his new-look Walsall team prepare to take on 'big-hitters' Charlton.
The opening fortnight of League One has delivered mixed results for the Saddlers with a win, draw and defeat in the league, coupled with a cup exit to Yeovil.
Whitney acknowledges last season's third-placed finish has raised expectations at the Banks's Stadium but insists that, after a busy close season which saw the core of the squad replaced, it will take time to find consistency.
"Patience is hard because potential takes time," he said. "That is what the chairman has got and what we've had at this club. With the expectancy of last year, some of us dwell on the negatives a little bit.
"That is the way society is these days, everyone wants a headline on a negative. I am not that person, I want to dwell on positives
"I can handle negatives and appreciate they are part of life and I don't get too carried away or too down. The players are very buoyant for Saturday."
He went on: "We need consistency over the first ten games and that will give me an idea of where we are at."
Whitney's attempts to mould his side have not been helped by several injuries, though both Erhun Oztumer (back) and Isaiah Osbourne are expected to return for tomorrow's visit of the Addicks.
The manager also expects Rico Henry to be back 'in weeks' after it was confirmed the left-back does not require surgery on a dislocated shoulder.
Charlton, who were relegated from the Championship last term, also have four points from their first three league games and Whitney expects a tough encounter.
"Charlton have had their ups and downs but I think they will be there or thereabouts with the players they have added," he said.
"We have shown over the years we can compete with the big-hitters in this league and I am looking to do that tomorrow.
"Of course, everyone goes on about budgets and we can still prove, like we did last year, that we can compete with them."
