Walsall miss out on Troy Deeney windfall

Walsall have missed out on their biggest-ever cash windfall after former striker Troy Deeney signed a new deal with Watford.

Deeney, who was with the Saddlers between 2006 and 2010, was a target for Premier League champions Leicester who were believed to be willing to pay £30millon for his services.

Walsall sold Deeney to the Hornets for £500,000 in 2010, in a deal that is believed to also entitle them to 20 per cent of any profit.

Had Deeney moved to the King Power Stadium, it could have netted the Saddlers as much as £6million.

But the forward has instead committed his long term future to Watford, after penning a new five year deal.

Deeney said: "This club really means business and I want to be part of this. I've listened carefully to everything the club has had to say to me recently.

"We've talked things through in a sensible way - and it's helped me fully deal with lots of my own thoughts.

"When you're right in the middle of something, maybe you take it for granted how quickly things are moving forward.

"I don't think I've done that, but by talking it over it's clear that Watford isn't ever going to settle for second-bes.

"That's how I want to feel about my career, so it works for me."
