Jason Demetriou joins Southend after rejecting Walsall
Jason Demetriou has completed his move to Southend after rejecting the offer of a new deal at Walsall.
The talented right-back was one of the Saddlers key performers last season as they just missed out on winning promotion to the Championship.
Demetriou was snapped up on a one-year-deal from Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta last summer and quickly became a fan favourite at the Banks's Stadium for his dynamic displays.
It had been hoped the defender would sign a new two-year-deal offered to him by the Walsall board at the end of last season.
But the 28-year-old, who commuted from London last season, has instead opted to move closer to his home in Essex.
"When the offer came about it perked my ears up," Demetriou said.
"I can see the potential of the club and it's going places, the manager has a good vision for the team, so it in the end there was a lot of boxes ticked for me.
"I'm really looking forward to getting started now, we've got a good squad here and I think we'll be up there this season.
"It's a great feeling to be involved in the play-offs, but I'm hoping this season with a new club we can go one better and we can get automatic promotion."
