Boss Jon Whitney has told his Walsall players to keep the heat on promotion rivals Burton Albion until the last kick of the season.

The Brewers took a giant leap towards clinching automatic promotion from League One with a 2-1 win over Gillingham on Saturday.

That result left the Saddlers six points behind Nigel Clough's side with two games to play, starting with a home clash against Fleetwood today.

But a 2-0 victory over the Cod Army together with a 2-0 win at Port Vale on Sunday would see Whitney's men promoted if Doncaster beat Burton on the last day.

And the interim chief has told his players they must be ready to capitalise if Burton do slip up.

Whitney said: "For four to five years we have been building a philosophy to get us into this situation. It's been a slow burner, but it has kept burning and we have never let the flame go out.

"We have kept believing and now it's starting to get a bit more heated. We are turning it up a bit.

"The lads understand we have got a play-off place but we also realise their is still a chance this could go right to the wire. We have to be ready if Burton slip up."

Today's clash with Fleetwood marks the Saddlers last home game of the season, with the Banks's Stadium set for one of it's biggest attendances of the campaign.

More than 5,000 tickets had been sold in the build-up despite the game being live on Sky Sports and Whitney is determined to send supporters home happy.

He said: "If we beat Fleetwood it goes to the last game – if we take it to the last game this story can continue for another week.

"It's the last home game of the season and we are determined to deliver for the fans.

"We are playing for livelihoods, we are playing for memories and history books. That is an incredible."
