Walsall would have won by a much greater margin had it not been for the performance of Shrimpers goalkeeper Daniel Bentley who produced a string of outstanding saves.
But Whitney's men kept going right to the end and were fully deserving of the victory that leaves them two points behind second placed Burton Albion, with a game in hand.
