Andy Taylor has flexible friends at Walsall
Defender Andy Taylor believes Walsall's flexibility will be a major asset in their quest to win automatic promotion.
Since his appointment as interim boss, Jon Whitney has been happy to alternate between formations.
The Saddlers have frequently switched from a back three to a back four in recent outings.
Taylor is one of the players key to that adjustment, with the 30-year-old impressing at both left-back and centre-half in the past few weeks.
While he is more used to his customary full-back role, he's enjoying playing in the two systems.
He said: "Playing in a back three is not something I've done before – I've always been a left-back to be honest – quite boring.
"But we've introduced it this season, under Dean Smith at first, when we were flipping between the two formations.
"Like any formation, a back three has got its pros and its cons – some games it works better than others, in others the back four works better.
"But I think the fact that we've got that in our locker, in our armoury is a big advantage, because it will always keep teams guessing and it always gives us a Plan B.
"If something isn't quite working, we can flip to it and everybody is quite comfortable and knows their role within it.
"I see it as a big advantage that we can do that."
Taylor will be part of the Walsall squad that heads to Sheffield United on Saturday looking to extend what is the best away record in the country.
The defender spent three years at Bramall Lane between 2009 and 2012 but made just 45 appearances after he ruptured his anterior cruciate and was out of action for 15 months.
Now he heads back to his former club part of a Saddlers team that has lost just once on their travels in League One this season, with the former Blade admitting it is a record he is proud of.
Taylor continued: "Our away form has been astounding. I didn't quite realise how good it was until three or four games ago.
"Bradders (Tom Bradshaw) said on the bus that we've got the best away record in the country. Home or away – I don't really pay attention to form because every game is different.
"But this record is something we are proud of and something we will fight hard to keep hold of.
"Every game is massive now until the end of the season, home or away, but records are something to be proud of and something to fight to try to hold on to, which we are going to do.
"If we do, that will put us in good stead and we will do everything we can to do that."
