Boss Sean O'Driscoll expressed his disappointment at Walsall's defeat to Millwall but insisted there were still positives to be drawn from the performance today.

On a cold, wet and windy afternoon at the Banks's Stadium, a second-half brace from Lee Gregory as well as debut goal from Mahlon Romeo settled matters.

Walsall, who handed a debut to rookie goalkeeper Liam Roberts, dominated the opening hour.

But they couldn't make the break-through, with both Anthony Forde and Rico Henry hitting the woodwork for the hosts.

They went on to get punished, with the Lions showing their ruthless side following three well-taken goals.

The result leaves the Saddlers second in League One, but four points behind leaders Burton Albion who beat Bradford.

O'Driscoll said: "We were in control until they scored the first goal. With the conditions how they were, the first goal was always going to be crucial and we couldn't quite get it.

"Credit to Millwall, they defended well. Maybe we needed a bit of luck, something to bounce off somebody's knee.

"It was one of those games where we just couldn't get the ball over the line. We hit the post, we hit the bar. But we kept plugging away so credit to them for that."

O'Driscoll continued: "But then we were guilty of being a little bit naïve. A goal down on 60 minutes - there was plenty of time to get back in to it.

"I thought we responded really well and then got caught on two counter attacks. I am disappointed with the result but there were lots of positives in the performance."
