The former Arsenal and Manchester City striker has applied for the job, left open by Dean Smith's departure to Brentford on Monday.

Dickov, 43, was most recently at Doncaster Rovers, who sacked him in September with the club 17th in the League One standings following relegation from the Championship last season.

The 10-capped Scotland international previously had a two-and-a-half-year stint in charge of Oldham Athletic, who he guided to a shock 3-2 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup, only to resign a week later as a result of the Latics' poor form in League One.

Meanwhile, title rivals Coventry City are hoping to capitalise on the departure of Smith – as well as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, the boss of league leaders Burton Albion – this week.

"With total respect to the two clubs, I sit here hoping this might disrupt their fluency," said Sky Blues chief and former Albion boss Tony Mowbray.

"There's always the potential for disruption when you get a new manager with different ideas, who perhaps doesn't like this or that player he's inherited."
