Chesterfield 1 Walsall 1 - Report and pictures
[gallery] Walsall and Chesterfield will have to do battle again for a place in the FA Cup third round following a 1-1 draw at the Proact Stadium.
On a windy day in Derbyshire, the Saddlers took a first half lead after Jason Demetriou's cross somehow found itself past goalkeeper Tommy Lee.
But despite having the weather to their advantage in the second half, the Spireites levelled a minute before the end when captain Samy Morsy bundled the ball home from close range.
It means both teams will be in the hat for Monday's third round draw, a stage of the competition the Saddlers haven't reached since 2008.
As expected, Walsall's management trio of John Ward, Jon Whitney and Neil Cutler made just one change from the emphatic derby win over Shrewsbury.
With Tom Bradshaw missing through injury, Jordan Cook was named as the loan frontman as the coaches stuck with a 4-2-3-1 system.
For fellow managerless outfit Chesterfield, former Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake partnered ex-Birmingham forward Lee Novak up front.
On a horribly windy afternoon at the Proact, the strength of the gales meant both sides took their time adjusting to the blustery conditions.
But with the weather to their advantage, it was the home side who threatened first.
Dion Donohue did brilliantly to knock the ball past Jason Demetriou and then gallop down the right-flank before delivering a low cross which Neil Etheridge scrambled behind.
The Spireites had seen more of the ball in the opening stages but they fell behind in bizarre circumstances as the clock ticked towards the 20 minute mark.
Demetriou did excellently to get into the box and burst to the by-line, but his pinged cross bamboozled keeper Tommy Lee with the ball seemingly hitting the glovesman before crossing the line.
Chesterfield came a whisker away from pulling level minutes later when Etheridge rushed out of his goal to make a clearance.
A poor kick saw Donohue collect the loose ball and then find Novak who, with the keeper back-tracking, hooked a brilliant 35-yard effort which sailed inches wide.
With the wind catching the ball almost every time it hit the air, Chesterfield gave up trying to whip in crosses after forcing a number of corners.
And they came close to pulling level when Donohue's low set-piece delivery found Ian Evatt in the box but the defender's strike was expertly blocked by Romaine Sawyers.
The conditions meant Walsall were finding it difficult to clear their lines but a crisp passing move almost saw them double their advantage in the 39th minute.
After good work from Morris, George Evans and Cook combined with a neat one-two allowing the Manchester City star to carry the ball to edge of the box.
But with the goal at his mercy, the midfielder scrapped his shot and fired agonisingly wide when he should have hit the target.
Walsall came out for the second half with the advantage of shooting towards their own supporters and having the wind behind them.
And they almost doubled their advantage inside the first few minutes when Milan Lalkovic was sent in on goal only to be denied by a brilliant recovering tackle by Drew Talbot.
Minutes later and Talbot was again the hero when the defender cleared off the line after Paul Downing rose highest from a corner.
All the momentum was now with the Saddlers and they again should have doubled their lead when an unmarked Cook headed over from Morris' whipped in delivery.
Determined to get a foothold back on the game, Chesterfield came close when Ebanks-Blake produced a smart turn to get away from Downing before firing a deflected strike just wide.
Walsall responded with Anthony Forde replacing Morris.
But it was the home side who threatened again, with Etheridge doing well to first block a Novak effort before then getting to the ball ahead of Ebanks-Blake.
The Saddlers hit-back with Rico Henry almost scoring what would have undoubtedly gone down as goal of the season.
Picking the ball up in the left-back area, the 18-year-old ran the length of the field - beating a handful of players before seeing his shot from just inside the box blocked.
But moments later, the home side came a whisker away from pulling level a staggering three times.
First, substitute Dan Gardner's effort was spectacularly cleared off the line by Henry. Then from the resultant corner, Downing also hacked away from under his own cross bar following Ebanks-Blake's header.
And the former Wolves man wasn't done there, with the striker then pulling off an unbelievable over-head kick which hit the crossbar and then bounced onto the line before Etheridge gathered.
Walsall's management duo make their second change with a little over 10 minutes remaining with Sam Mantom returning from injury at the expense of Evans. Amadou Bakayoko then replaced Lalkovic.
But it was Chesterfield who were now on top and they came close to pulling level again with five minutes left on the clock, Talbot's cross being headed wide by Liam O'Neil.
But as the game entered the final minute of normal time, the home side did manage to force replay.
Despite seemingly being fouled twice himself, skipper Adam Chambers was harshly penalised for a foul on Ebanks-Blake.
The resultant free-kick was sent deep into the Saddlers box and, after a large scramble, Samy Morsy bundled the ball home from close range.
Walsall responded immediately with Demetriou rattling the crossbar with a stunning 30-yard free-kick.
But it was the home side who continued to press in stoppage time, with Etheridge producing another fine save from a corner to ensure a replay.
