Smith, who has guided Saddlers to a storming start this season, has been targeted by the west London club in their protracted search for a new manager after the sacking of head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen in September.

Some reports suggest an official approach has been made to Walsall by Brentford.

Lee Carsley has been in temporary charge of the Bees sincethen.

Walsall boss Smith saw his side beat Bradford City 2-1 yesterday, a win which ended the Yorkshire side's 10-match unbeaten run.

Saddlers currently lie fourth in League One, four points behind leaders Coventry City with a game in hand.

Saddlers' early season success has thrust Smith's name into the spotlight for a number of managerial vacancies.

Walsall refused permission for Rotherham United to speak to Smith in early October.

The club said at the time A Walsall statement read: "In response to media speculation, the club can confirm it received an approach from a Championship club for permission to speak to Dean Smith. This approach was categorically rejected.

"As one of the longest serving managers in the country, Dean has been instrumental in the club's progress since his appointment and is fundamental to our future plans."
