Paul Downing not surprised by Saddlers' success
Defender Paul Downing insists people shouldn't be surprised to see Walsall competing at the top of League One.
The in-form Saddlers are currently third in the division, two points behind co-leaders Gillingham and Coventry but with a game in hand.
For many, Dean Smith's side are a surprise package at the top of the table having finished 14th last season.
But Downing believes a promotion push was always on the cards for the 2015/16 campaign.
"We knew going into pre-season that if we start well there wasn't a lot wrong from the previous campaigns," he said.
"Some people may be surprised to see us up there but we haven't surprised ourselves.
"It's always been a case of fine margins with us.
"But we got off to a good start by winning some games and now the confidence and momentum have taken over.
"We believe we should be up and amongst it and, with our performances, that belief is growing.
"Now it's just a case of maintaining it.
"Generally, we have been very consistent this season and I believe we are a force to be reckoned with."
Having found himself out of the side towards the end of last season, Downing has already made 20 appearances this campaign.
Now looking forward to Saturday's clash with Sheffield United, the centre-back is pleased to have once again made a defensive slot his own.
"I worked really hard over the summer to improve my game," Downing said.
"I've played every league game and I feel I have been consistent.
"I didn't like being out of the side.
"But we have been very solid at the back this season and I'd like to think I have contributed.

"I want to keep my place in the team going forward and keep getting better."
Downing has had to adapt at being part of a back three and back four this season as Smith continues to tinker with the starting line-up.
But the 24-year-old believes being adaptable is now one of the team's biggest strengths.
"I think last season we became a little bit predictable at times," Downing said.
"Now we are very flexible and it causes teams problems.
"We are analysing each game and seeing how best to go.
"The change of formation and having a big squad of players that can be rotated is making a big difference this season."
Having not played last weekend because of the international break, Downing admits the players are raring to go for the visit of Nigel Adkins' Blades on Saturday.
And he believes the rest came at the perfect time.
"It was strange not having a game but we worked hard during the week," Downing added.
"We then had a couple of days away from the building to get refreshed, which is good because we have got a busy period ahead.
"The Christmas period is just a few weeks away and we have also got games we need to fit in.
"We are all really looking forward to it but a rest was important."
