Kieron Morris here to stay after Gills stunner
Winger Kieron Morris hopes his stunning goal against Gillingham will help cement his place in Walsall's starting XI.
The 21-year-old wideman has impressed when coming off the bench this season but has only been handed three League One starts by boss Dean Smith.
Morris' fine individual strike against Justin Edinburgh's Gills inspired the Saddlers to a 3-2 victory in Saturday's top-of-the-table clash.
And now the former Wrexham loanee is aiming for an extended run in Smith's side.
"I have been frustrated a bit because before Gillingham my last start was four games ago at Wigan," Morris said. "But I kept my head up, kept strong and just needed to take my chance when it came which I feel I have done.
"The gaffer knows I can bring something to the team both when I come off the bench or when I'm starting.
"I think I've always made an impact coming off the bench and getting lots of shots away.
"I'm full of confidence and hopefully there will be a lot more starts and goals to come."
The win against Gillingham saw the Saddlers reclaim top spot in League One.
But at one stage it had looked like it would be the Kent-based side coming away with the points when they went two goals up inside half an hour.
"Fair play to Gillingham, I thought they were in our faces from the kick off and put us on the back foot a bit," Morris
said. "With them going 2-0 up, I thought
it was going to be a long day for us but all the lads stayed in the game and kept battling.
"I managed to score and when Milan Lalkovic put us on level terms I thought we had a great chance to win the game because the whole team is confident at the moment and on a high."
Morris' goal on Saturday was his first of the season but the winger is now hoping a lot more will follow.
"I just got the ball out on the wing, saw some space, cut inside onto my left foot and pulled the trigger," he said. "Fortunately, it went into the bottom corner.
"I always drift inside in games. I come in and out off the line.
"When I come inside and see a lot of space, I always pull the trigger and aim for the target and against Gillingham it was my lucky day.
"I've come close a number of times this season so it was great to see one finally go in. I hit the bar in stoppage time against Colchester in the 4-4 draw saw that goal made up for that."
Now leading the pack in League One, Morris insists all the Walsall players believe they can win promotion this season.
"Gillingham was one of those games we had to win so everyone is delighted," he said. "Now we've got to maintain it and see if we can keep putting consistent performances in.
"All the lads say we've got the ability in the team to get promotion.
"We all believe it. We've just got to keep playing the way we are and hopefully it will happen."
