Video: Simple message from boss Dean Smith

Dean Smith admits to having a relatively straightforward team talk ahead of tonight's game – he will simply ask for more of the same.

The Saddlers boss is understandably delighted with the way his side have started the season and is eager for them to make it five wins a row by claiming another Championship scalp in the Capital One Cup.

Victory at Nottingham Forest in the first round was the trigger for a fine fortnight and Smith is eager to keep things simple.

"I will be asking the players for more of the same – that is all you can do," he said.

"We want to keep the momentum going and that is pretty much the message."

Smith believes his team could have been handed few tougher tests than the Seagulls, who themselves sit second in the Championship after matching the Saddlers record of 10 points from the opening four games.

Chris Hughton's side were 1-0 winners at Southend in the first round, a match Walsall had scouts at ahead of their own visit to Roots Hall. And Smith said: "That helped us, as we've already got an idea of what they can do and how they might line up in this competition.

"We know how tough it is going to be and we will have to be somewhere near our best if we are going to win.

"But the players are in good spirits and we want to win every game we play."

One undoubted factor behind the Saddlers' blistering start has been Smith's ability to pick from a fully-fit squad for almost every game.

The manager has made at least two changes to his starting line-up for each fixture.

And he is delighted with the way players have responded whenever they've found themselves out of the team.

"When we have everyone fit we have real competition for places and what has really pleased me is when players have come off the bench, they have been ready," he said.

"The lads are working really hard in training and that is encouraging. I have huge faith in the team at the moment."
