Dean Smith: Walsall were well worth a point
Manager Dean Smith felt Walsall were worthy of their point after Tom Bradshaw's heavily-deflected equaliser earned them a 1-1 draw at Crewe.
Marcus Haber's 13th minute header looked like condemning the Saddlers to defeat.
But Bradshaw's shot took a big deflection off Harry Davis to fool home goalkeeper Paul Rachubka and level things up nine minutes from time.
Smith said: "It wasn't a classic match by any means. It was short on quality but, looking at the pitch, you can see why.
"There was a lot of endeavour, but it lacked quality. At the end of the day I think a draw was a fair result."
Smith admitted he wasn't happy with his side's first half performance, which left them trailing at the break.
He added: "They have got in behind us, I think Andy Taylor has played Haber on, he has hit the bar and we never dealt with the cross.
"We tried to get a goal back and we were always open to the counter attack. The second-half was a lot better. I thought we moved the ball with a lot more tempo and dominated.
"The first half, I wasn't pleased with how we played. It was a bit of a fortunate goal with the deflection but overall I thoughts our efforts probably deserved that."
The Saddlers are now eight points clear of the relegation zone but not quite mathematically safe from relegation, although it would take an extraordinary set of results to now spell trouble.
Smith said: "Some of the lads have looked at it already. Crewe can't go above us now, unless they win both games 7-0 and we lose 7-0 or something like that.
"Colchester can't go above us. All of the other seven teams down there could mathematically but it will be tough for them to win all their games.
"We're pleased that we haven't been beat because we wanted to continue the momentum we've got, coming off the back of two home wins."
