Dean Smith: The goals will come for Walsall

Manager Dean Smith insists the goals will come for Walsall after they drew another blank at home to Notts County.

Yesterday's 0-0 draw at the Banks's was the third game in succession the Saddlers have failed to find the net and they have scored just four times in the last 11 games.

But after his team squander a host of good chances, including when Jordan Cook hit the bar and post in quick succession, Smith is convinced their luck will change sooner rather than later.

He said: "You can't create that many chances and not score – goals will come.

"It's not just happening at the moment – the players are certainly creating the chances and you just need a little bit of luck sometimes.

"Sometimes you need the goalkeeper to kick it in off your back or your backside and that just turns it around a little bit."

The manager denied his forward players might be lacking in confidence at present.

He added: "If it was a lack of confidence, we wouldn't have got in the areas we got in.

"Adam has had a couple of good chances. Driving into the box. Michael Cain has had chances.

"Kieron Morris looked really bright, came in and did well. We've had a number of opportunities, just didn't take them. We have to keep performing like we did today and we will be OK."

Smith agreed the result was a missed opportunity for the Saddlers to put breathing space between themselves and the League One relegation zone.

They remain 16th - just three points clear of the bottom four heading into Monday's game at Peterborough and Smith believes they need two more wins to guarantee safety.

"I would have thought 52 points probably makes you safe," he said. "We've got a game in hand over a few down below us and above us and it is very tight down there.

"The feeling is that we are in a better position than eight other teams below us. We've got a game against Peterborough on Monday that we get ready for and go and try and get three points.

"The only thing that was missing was a bit of composure in front of goal and a little bit of luck as well. We've hit the bar and the post and it's just not bounced for us."
