Walsall duo fitness doubts for tonight's clash
Walsall are fretting on the fitness of Tom Bradshaw and Andy Taylor ahead of tonight's clash with Sheffield United.
Concerns over left-back Taylor, who picked up a knock in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Milton Keynes Dons, prompted manager Dean Smith to yesterday recall Mal Benning from his loan at York City.
Top scorer Bradshaw is, meanwhile, suffering from a tight hamstring, but Smith remains hopeful he will pull through.
However, the manager will not unduly risk such a key player with the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final just five days away.
Bradshaw, who netted his 16th goal of the campaign against MK, has had four separate spells on the sidelines with hamstring issues this season.
The manager will be boosted by the return of Michael Cain from illness.
But the on-loan Leicester City midfielder may have to make do with a place on the bench should Smith deem Sam Mantom fit enough to continue after his comeback at the weekend.
Mantom started his first game of the season against MK and has declared himself ready to play two games in four days.
Smith said: "He feels he is OK to go again. Sometimes you have to be guided by the player.
"It was a tough game for both sides at the weekend but I thought Sam grew into it and it was really pleasing to have him back.
"He has played fewer games than anyone else and so should be pretty fresh."
Benning returns to the Banks's having made nine appearances for York having joined the League Two outfit on loan in January.
But he was not involved in their 0-0 draw with Carlisle on Saturday and with the Saddlers also having Rico Henry sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, Smith made the decision to recall the 21-year-old.
With Wembley so close, the manager admits the scheduling of tonight's game is less than ideal but expects his players to rise to the occasion.
"It is a really good opponent for us to be playing - I believe Sheffield United are the biggest club in the division," he said.
"We have done well against them in the recent past but it will be a test for us."
