Sam Mantom could start for Walsall on Saturday
Sam Mantom could make his first start of the season for Walsall this Saturday, manager Dean Smith has confirmed.
The midfielder, the club's player of the season last year, has been limited to just four substitute appearances this term due to persistent knee problems.
But after playing for 65 minutes for the reserves earlier this week, Smith is ready to throw the 23-year-old in against MK Dons."I think he would be ready," said Smith. "I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be. He's put himself in contention by playing in the reserve game the other day.
"The work he's done over the last two months with Jon Whitney has been incredible to keep his fitness up and I think he's helped Jon Whitney with his fitness as well!
"Any of the lads will tell you that Whitts pushes them and he pushes himself by doing it so he ends up as fit as them."
Mantom's return could be timely, with Saddlers skipper Adam Chambers doubtful with a high ankle sprain.
"He (Adam) is quite positive that he will be ok - I think if you asked him it would be 80/20. If you asked our physio Jon Whitney it would be 50/50."
Smith is also hopeful over wing duo Anthony Forde and Jordan Cook, who have missed the last two games with groin strains.
