Dean Smith: Walsall got what they deserved

Manager Dean Smith felt Walsall got what they deserved after they slumped to a 2-0 home defeat against Leyton Orient.

Second-half goals from Ryan Hedges and Chris Dagnall saw the struggling O's record a comfortable win at the Banks's.

And Smith agreed his team were nowhere near good enough, saying: "We got what we deserved in the end.

"They were set up to press us after our centre-halves passed the ball and they did it.

"Unfortunately, we kept passing it. You can all see it is not a pitch to pass on at the moment, certainly in your own half.

"We needed to get it into their half to go and play. It took us too long to do that. They won more second balls than us on a poor pitch at the moment and they went and played in our half.

"The two bits of quality, they went and scored."

Smith also felt his side were affected by comments from a frustrated home crowd, adding: "We wanted to change things.

"We went with three up there today, but we did not feel it was working after 35 minutes and changed it back.

"Once they got the goal it gives them a lift and it was a very hard for us to get back. We had too many below par performances.

"You can't excuse that. At 0-0 you are still in the game, we didn't play very well in the first-half.

"We are still trying to pass it, we are a team who does that. We spoke about it at half-time, the need to go and play in their half.

"The players can get affected from a bit of sarcasm from the fans because we are not playing in their half.

"It looked like the players got affected by a few negative comments because that is not like us.

"That is what is disappointing, to have so many of our experienced players who did not perform to their best or anywhere near."
