Dean Smith: It's a point earned for Walsall

Manager Dean Smith felt Walsall earned a big point as Jordy Hiwula salvaged a 1-1 draw at Bradford.

The on-loan Manchester City striker headed home Jordan Cook's cross with 16 minutes to go, cancelling out Billy Clarke's opener for the Bantams.

It was his third goal in four games after joining the Saddlers earlier this month, with Smith saying: "It was a hard-earned point and probably a fair point on reflection of the game.

"It was not a great spectacle but certainly the pitch does not help that. Two teams tried their hardest to win the game.

"It was a good strike from Clarke and it looked like it bobbled over Richard O'Donnell's hand but I have not seen it back.

"We managed to get back into the game with a good cross from Cookie and a good header from Jordy. I think it was a fair result on the day."

The Saddlers had fallen behind when Clarke beat goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell from 25 yards six minutes into the second-half.

Smith added: "That was one of the things I told the players. In the first 10 or 15 minutes of the second-half, we did not get close enough to people and we should have got closer to him.

"On another day it is one you expect Richard to save and on another pitch he would. Our goal came from the one bit of bright play we had in the second half to open them up."

Smith's side are now unbeaten in almost four months away from home in the league and they have moved to with four points of the play-off positions.

The manager added: "It's a big point, coming from behind in the second half with a big crowd behind them and them putting the pressure on. We withstood it and got our rewards in the end."
