The striker headed in Jordan Cook's cross 16 minutes from time to save a point for the Saddlers at Valley Parade.

Billy Clarke had earlier fired the hosts ahead when he beat visiting goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell from close range.

Substitute Francois Zoko went close to a winner for the hosts, but headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

The Saddlers will head to Preston on Tuesday night unbeaten in four months on the road in the league.

Things looked bleak when Clarke lit up a game of little quality with a shot which beat O'Donnell six minutes after the break.

But Cook and Hiwula were able to craft an equaliser to maintain play-off hopes for Dean Smith's side.

The Saddlers suffered a blow prior to kick-off with top scorer Tom Bradshaw not fit enough to make his expected return from a hamstring injury.

Anthony Forde was back in the side after recovering from a groin strain, replacing James Baxendale in the only change from the team which lost 1-0 to Port Vale last weekend.

Bradford were not without their injury issues either, with top scorer James Hanson absent because of hamstring trouble, while Andrew Davies and Filipe Morais also missed out.

Walsall had the first big chance of the game when Hiwula found space on the left wing.

He then ran at full-back Rory McArdle before attempting a toe-poked finish which goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could only parry, with Forde unable to make a clean connection as he put the rebound wide.

The hosts then went close when Mark Yeates' free-kick from the wing evaded everyone in the box and drifted just wide of the far post, with O'Donnell a spectator.

Goals: Clarke 51, Hiwula 74.

Walsall: Donnell, Purkiss, Downing, O'Connor, Taylor (Henry 71), Chambers A, Cain, Forde, Sawyers (Grimes 71), Cook (Baxendale 90), Hiwula.

Substitutes not used: Chambers J, Flanagan, Murphy, MacGillivray (GK).

Bradford City: Pickford, Darby, McArdle, MacKenzie, Meredith, Liddle, Halliday, Knott, Yeates (Sheehan 87), Stead, Clarke (Zoko 76).

Substitutes not used: Dolan, Kennedy, Routis, McBurnie, Williams (GK).

Referee: Tim Robinson

Paul Downing was then alert to make a likely goal-saving interception after Andy Halliday had raced into the box and opted to try and find Jon Stead rather than shoot.

Hiwula sent a weak shot straight at Pickford but chances were scarce in a half where the two sides rather cancelled each other out.

The only further worry for O'Donnell was a deflected Yeates cross which he was forced to tip over the bar.

Things continued to be scrappy early in the second half before Clarke took advantage of some rare space to fire the hosts ahead from 25 yards out, his shot beating O'Donnell at the near post.

It was a rare moment of quality as both teams struggled on the surface, Forde sending a free-kick just wide from 25 yards in a rare Saddlers chance just past the hour mark.

Michael Cain also drove over from distance as the visitors probed without exerting any serious pressure on their hosts. Smith introduced Rico Henry and Ashley Grimes with 20 minutes remaining.

The latter's first action was a tumble in the box which drew appeals for a penalty from the visiting supporters but no reaction from referee Tim Robinson.

But the Saddlers were soon level thanks to a moment of brilliance from Cook and Hiwula. The former supplied a superb inswinging cross which the latter, having timed his run to perfection, glanced past Pickford.

Bradford boss Phil Parkinson introduced Francois Zoko who almost had an instant impact when he headed a corner just wide.

The striker was then denied by a last-ditch Ben Purkiss challenge after being found by Stead six yards out.

Forde saw a shot blocked as Walsall looked to counter while Bradford substitute Alan Sheehan was denied by O'Donnell.
