Walsall close in on late loan swoop

Dean Smith believes the time is right to strengthen his attacking options as he eyes a late January loan swoop.

The Saddlers boss is keen to bring in cover out wide and up front, though any deals could depend on players heading out the other way.

Winger Kieron Morris yesterday joined Conference Premier outfit Wrexham until the end of the season and approaches have been made for other members of Smith's squad.

And while the manager remains vague on the specifics, he admits he could move before Monday's deadline.

"I am looking at maybe bringing someone in," said the manager."There are areas I want to cover. We will always have a 24 hour call-back after 28 days on loans out but I think it is the right time to strengthen in areas I feel we have not got much cover.

"It will be a loan, one or two might be going out, I have had a couple of enquiries. I think we need a bit more cover in wide areas and up front."

The Saddlers remain among the lowest scorers in League One with just 26 goals in 26 games. Almost half of those have come from top-scorer Tom Bradshaw, who has 12 to his name. Smith, however, is encouraged that goals have begun to come from other sources.

"We have had a lot more people chipping in with goals," he said. "Cookie (Jordan Cook), Fordey (Anthony Forde) and Michael Cain have got a few in the past few weeks so we are getting goals from those areas."

Morris' loan includes a 24 hour recall clause after the first 28 days. Smith believes the 20-year-old will benefit greatly from the test at Vanarama Premier level.

"It will be brilliant for him and means a lot of the younger lads are going out and getting experience at the moment," he said.
