Dean Smith slams ref for Walsall penalty
Walsall manager Dean Smith slammed referee Lee Collins for the penalty decision that he classed as the game's turning point in the 4-1 defeat to Scunthorpe.
Having gone 2-0 down, Michael Cain's strike had pulled Walsall back in the game.
But Collins awarded the visitors a controversial spot-kick when Neal Bishop went to ground under Paul Downing's challenge.
Paddy Madden crashed home the penalty and Bishop sealed the points a couple of minutes later to leave Smith an angry man.
He said: "I've seen it again after the game and it's never a penalty. The referee couldn't get his whistle to his mouth quick enough.
"It's a poor decision and it's cost us the chance of getting back into a game that I felt we were getting back into and could have got something out of.point of the game today.
"I wasn't even too angry about it - I felt sorry for him more than anything because it was such a poor decision.
"I don't want to be having a go at officials but that was the turning. It changes the game at 3-1 although we have to defend better for the fourth goal, that's for sure.
"It's a hard one to take and we have to take it on the chin but they have had a helping hand.
"We had started the second half well and asked the question of the players because there were two ways it could go at that point and our response was excellent.
"We scored a goal and were in the ascendancy but then they were given the opportunity to score a third and that was the turning point of the game."
