Walsall FC will keep focus, vows skipper Adam Chambers
Captain Adam Chambers promises Walsall won't get caught up in the hype during the weeks which could shape their season.
Today's home game with third-placed Swindon Town begins a critical period for the Saddlers.
Dean Smith's men travel to second-placed MK Dons on Sunday, host Midlands rivals Coventry City at the Banks's next Saturday and then head to Preston for the first leg of their Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area Final the following Wednesday.
Yet while fans might dream of Wembley appearances and a possible play-off charge, the skipper insists players must concentrate their focus on the here and now.
"We just need to keep the momentum going and we will see where that takes us," said Chambers. "If you look too far into the future you can take your eye off the next game.
"We just need to keep things going and we're looking to keep improving. I'm sure we will be alright.
Rhythm
"I have been in football long enough to know the old adage 'one game at a time' is said so often because it's true.
"You have to focus on the next game and you can't get too far ahead of yourself.
"We won't stop trying to improve. After every training session we have debriefs and that's why this is such a good place to play football because you are always learning."
After an inconsistent start, not helped by a lengthy injury list, the Saddlers have looked increasingly strong over the past two months and Chambers believes they have rediscovered some rhythm.
"We are just looking to be competitive in each game," he said. "Whether that's without the ball or with the ball – without the ball we need to make sure we are tough to break down. When we have the ball we are looking to create chances."
"I think we are doing that at the moment."
Former Walsall skipper Andy Butler looks set to leave Sheffield United for good after just six months and sign for Doncaster Rovers in the New Year.
Butler left the Saddlers to join the Blades in the summer but has not made a league appearance for Nigel Clough's side.
He spent a month back on loan at the Banks's earlier in the campaign and has been on loan with Doncaster since October.
