Walsall's rotten FA Cup run continues and, on this occasion, they can have few complaints.

Shrewsbury Town captain Liam Lawrence's sublime winner eight minutes into the second half means that the Saddlers wait to reach the third round will be extended to eight years.

This time they were bundled out in a first round replay by the League Two Shrews, who were the better side in an altogether disappointing game where Dean Smith's men never really got going.

The defeat also ended a five game unbeaten run but while that will sting, the late sending off of skipper Adam Chambers will hurt more.

Walsall's captain was shown a straight red card by referee Gavin Ward for a challenge on Shrewsbury defender Nathaniel Knight-Percival and will now miss three games.

With Sam Mantom's injury concerns showing no signs of being over, that means the Saddlers resources in midfield will be severely tested in three upcoming away games.

The big news beforehand was obviously the absence of Bradshaw but perhaps even more worryingly Mantom.

Smith had talked before the match how last season's Player of the Year could well make his first start of this campaign - but he was not deemed fit enough for the bench.

Shrewsbury had flown out of the blocks in the opening game at the Banks's Stadium ten days ago, taking the lead inside five minutes.

Here the pace was far more sedate. Jean–Louis Akpa Akpro had an early shot from distance that was blocked but otherwise the only feature of the opening 15 minutes was Mathieu Manset constantly being flagged offside.

But the big French striker then had the first big chance of the game, heading Michael Cain's inviting cross wide from six yards out.

In fairness to Manset, he was under pressure from Jermaine Grandison but there were no such excuses for Shrewsbury's James Collins soon after, when he blasted a shot from eight yards out well wide after a neat lay back from James Wesolowski.

The hosts began to get the upper hand and after Saddlers keeper Richard O'Donnell had made rather hard work of gathering Bobby Grant's free-kick, James Collins headed wide from the edge of the box and Lawrence drilled just over.

Walsall held firm though Knight Percival did have a chance right at the end of the first half, when he headed Grant's corner over.

There was much more life about the Saddlers in the opening moments of the second half and Anthony Forde narrowly missed making contact with Jordan Cook's low cross.

Back came the hosts, with Grant shooting over from distance before Akpa Akpro missed a great chance to put the hosts ahead, heading James Collins' cross over from six yards out.

As it was, the Shrews did not have to wait much longer to grab the advantage and Lawrence's goal was almost worth it.

Collins fed Grant, who spotting his skipper in space rolled a pass across the 18-yard box. Lawrence did the rest, striking the ball first time left-footed into the corner – the ball hitting the net about halfway up.

Stung, the Saddlers looked for a quick response and Sawyers would have found it had he headed Ben Purkiss' cross anywhere other than straight at home goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler.

Walsall's playmaker was soon substituted for James Baxendale as Smith looked for a way back, Ashley Grimes also replacing the ineffective Manset.

But it was Michael Cain who continued to look the visitors most creative player and he sent Adam Chambers running through on goal with a fine through ball.

Goals are rare for the Saddlers skipper, however, and he could only shoot straight at Leutwiler.

With eight minutes to go, Chambers was shown a straight red for scything down Knight-Percival to cap a miserable night for the Saddlers.
