Neither side was able to make the breakthrough in a full-bloodied encounter at the Banks's Stadium.

Romaine Sawyers missed a great chance for the hosts when he shot wide and had another effort saved by visiting keeper Ben Alnwick.

Michael Bostwick had Peterborough's best opportunity when he headed wide at the far post.

Though the result extended Walsall's good run, there will be some frustration they were unable to take more from a game where their neat approach play too often broke down around the box.

It means they are still yet to win a league game without top scorer Tom Bradshaw, who did not recover in time from a hamstring injury in time to play.

His absence meant a start for Mathieu Manset, in the Saddlers only change from the team which faced Sheffield United in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Wednesday.

Sam Mantom was missing from the bench.

Home skipper Adam Chambers had the first attempt on goal in a lively opening ten minutes, though his effort from distance was comfortably wide of the target.

Sawyers was the next man to have a chance but never really had the ball under control before sending a left-footed shot wide, following a neat exchange with Manset.

He made no connection at all when he missed a delicious Cook cross at the far post, when any touch would likely have beaten visiting keeper Alnwick.

Walsall were on top but the Posh went close when Kgosi Ntlhe's long-range strike cleared the bar by only a foot, before Jon Taylor's shot from distance deflected off James Chambers and flew wide with keeper Richard O'Donnell a spectator.

The keeper was then almost left red-faced as he came and got nowhere near a Taylor free-kick which was almost headed in before James Chambers cleared.

And Peterborough's Bostwick was left kicking himself when he could only head wide at the far post after a strong run into the box.

Alnwick was then forced into his first save by a long-range Forde shot which looked like dipping under the bar.

Tempers flared early in the second half and Jordan Cook was booked after a lunge on Ntlhe, with Sawyers and Posh's Joe Newell also given yellow cards for their part in the ensuing melee.

Forde then thumped a vicious shot just wide of the post for the hosts, while O'Donnell's inconsistent day continued when he spilled a Taylor cross – referee Alan Woolmer choosing to penalise Conor Washington for a foul.

The Saddlers had been struggling for the final pass but when Cain provided one just past the hour mark, Sawyers missed the chance to open the scoring when he pulled his left-footed shot wide from 12 yards out.

Visiting skipper Jack Payne hammered a shot just wide of the target from a free-kick, while Adam Chambers was narrowly off target with a half volley for the hosts.

Heading into the final five minutes, Alnwick was forced into a smart stop to keep out a Sawyers snapshot following pinball in the visiting box.
