Walsall win is just desserts to Dean Smith

Manager Dean Smith admitted Walsall's first away league victory had been "a long time coming" after their 2-1 win at Notts County.

A second-half Tom Bradshaw penalty sealed three points for the Saddlers, after home striker Garry Thompson had cancelled out Gary Jones' own goal opener for the visitors.

And Smith felt his side finally got what they deserved from an away performance, saying: "We have played better than this on the road and been beat, Crawley being one of them.

"We are pleased to go on the road and get a win on the road. It has been a long time coming. It's nice to get back-to-back wins.

"I thought there were spells of the game when we were under pressure and we have had to defend. We defended well. They were on a really good run and you could see why.

"The lads showed a lot of character and guts, they have got that in abundance."

Bradshaw's winning penalty was shrouded in controversy after it was awarded when County skipper Haydn Hollis handled – though the home players claimed the offence had occurred outside the box.

He said: "From what I have been told it was a definite handball. The referee has given a free-kick on the edge of the box but then I saw him point to the spot.

"It is the first penalty we have had for a long time and we will take it, we have been waiting a while."
