Former Walsall striker Clive Platt retires

Clive Platt, who started a 20-year pro career with Walsall, has been forced to hang up his boots.

The 37-year-old Wolverhampton-born striker, who was with League Two club Bury, announced his retirement yesterday, after failing to recover from a calf injury sustained before pre-season.

Platt began as an apprentice with the Saddlers, making his debut in 1995 and making 32 appearances, scoring four goals.

He moved to Rochdale as their then-record £100,000 signing in 1999 and had further spells at Notts County, Peterborough United, Milton Keynes Dons, Colchester United, Coventry City, Northampton Town before joining Bury in January this year.

In all, he played 618 times, scoring 110 goals.
