Walsall land Leicester City's Michael Cain
Walsall have signed Leicester City midfielder Michael Cain on a one-month loan – with Andy Butler heading back to Sheffield United.
The Saddlers had been expected to extend the stay of their former skipper, but manager Dean Smith feels the midfield area is a more pressing concern.
He has instead swooped for 20-year-old Cain, who is highly-rated at the Foxes, joining from Luton Town aged just 16, making his senior debut this season in the Capital One Cup.
Smith said: "This is an area of the team that we feel needs strengthening at this particular moment in time, so we are delighted to have Michael on board.
"I've seen him play a few times for the Under-21s at Leicester and we've had him training with us over the past couple of weeks, so we know what he will bring to the team.
"By the same token, he knows what we're about and what we expect, so hopefully he can hit the ground running.
"He's a box-to-box player who likes to win the ball and keep it. He's also got an eye for goal and likes to get forward at every opportunity.
"There is no doubt that he is a talented footballer who is rated highly at Leicester, so we are looking forward to seeing what he can do here."
Cain will wear squad number 12 and subject to Premier League clearance being received could make his debut at Crawley tomorrow.
His arrival at the Banks's Stadium means an exit for Butler, who had spent the last month on loan from the Blades.
Smith had again expressed his desire to keep the 30-year-old for longer in the wake of Saturday's 1-0 home defeat to Crewe, but an apparent change of heart has seen Cain come in and Butler depart.
