Walsall play waiting game on Andy Butler loan

Walsall manager Dean Smith will wait until next week before discussing any extension to Andy Butler's loan deal.

The centre-back's loan from Sheffield United will expire after the Saddlers' home game with Crewe a week on Saturday.

At this moment, Smith is prepared to wait before deciding whether to seek any extension and will instead discuss the matter with chairman Jeff Bonser and chief executive Stefan Gamble next week.

"I don't usually waste grey matter on thinking about things I don't have to think about yet," said Smith.

"I don't have to worry about it before the Crewe game so the week before I will have a chat with the chairman and the chief executive to see where we stand."

Butler has started all five league games since re-joining the Saddlers last month, although he missed out on Tuesday night's 1-0 win at Rochdale.

His parent club requested he not be made available for Johnstone's Paint Trophy fixtures as part of the loan agreement.

"When the loan agreement was made it was said he would not be able to play in the JPT," added Smith.

One of the most pleasing aspects of Tuesday's win and performance for Smith was that it came after he made six changes to the starting line-up. "I feel we are definitely going in the right direction," he added. "We have some good players who are back and available.

"It allowed me to change things round and get some fresh legs in there."
