Paul Downing after home comforts for Walsall

Defender Paul Downing today called on Walsall to make the most of back-to-back home games after admitting they should be picking up more points.

The Saddlers host improving Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, before welcoming early season League One leaders Bristol City seven days later.

Dean Smith's men beat Preston 3-1 to record their only league win of the season to date last time out in front of their own fans.

Vice-captain Downing believes the next two games should be targeted as a chance to gain some welcome upward momentum.

He said: "I think we have two home games now and neither are easy," he said. "But we had a good win against Preston last time out at home and that is where we need to pick the points up.

"Saturday's draw at Gillingham will be a good point gained if we can go on and take the points at home."

The Saddlers have struggled for wins at the Banks's in recent times, recording just seven in the league last year and the win over Preston came at the fourth time of asking this term.

Downing is keen to see those statistics improve and for Walsall to quickly climb from their current position of 20th in the table.

Like skipper Adam Chambers he believes that, as a team, they have been too inconsistent to this point.

Downing said: "I think at home we want to make it a tough place for other teams to come to and a difficult place and if we play like we did at Gillingham we have a chance of doing that.

"We have probably picked up too many draws but if we can get those couple of wins you can bounce up the league. It is still very congested.

"I think we should have more points for the players we have in the squad but we haven't and we can't dwell on that.

"We have just got to find that consistency in our performance, like we did at Gillingham, and work hard together. There are still points to be had but we want to climb that table as quickly as possible."
